VAIL VALLEY Colorado — As motorcycles rumbled up to June Creek Elementary, students cheered and waved.

“It sounds like fireworks!” first-grader Niki Haviar cried.

Riding Harleys and driving a shiny mini Cooper, a motorcade arrived at the school Wednesday to deliver $7,500 worth of school supplies.

Members of the Cordillera Motorcycle Association have donated $21,000 to three Eagle County schools. Money funded school supplies for kindergartners and first graders at June Creek and Avon elementary schools. The motorcycle club also paid for a breakfast program for Edwards Elementary students.

“I think it's really important that the kids be provided an opportunity to blossom into citizens of the United States with their fullest potential,” motorcycle club founder Bob Schmidt said.

June Creek students gathered in the gym to receive backpacks. They also got boxes with enough school supplies to last the whole year, everything from crayons to tissues to glue.

“It's the best backpack,” Haviar raved. “I love it.”

Money for the schools came from the motorcycle club's Rider Cup fundraiser last month. The event raised more than $150,000 for community organizations. Members of the motorcycle club also delivered supplies to Avon elementary on Wednesday and plan to swing by Edwards Elementary next week.

The gift for the schools is something June Creek principal Tracy Barber appreciates.

“These are amazing people. They give much to public education,” she said.

When Barber told parents about the donation, they were enthused.

“It was like giving the best Christmas gift ever,” Barber said. “Their faces lit up. I wish I could have taken a picture of the moment.”
